Retaining walls and planter walls that hold Ventura County soil in place
Retaining walls have one job: hold soil that wants to move, and keep holding it after the wettest winter. VC Turf builds segmental block retaining walls, block planter walls, and railroad tie walls, each on a compacted base with gravel and a drain behind it, because the wall that fails is almost always the one that trapped water.
Block, planter, or railroad tie: which wall fits the job
A wall that holds a slope, a wall that raises a bed, and a wall that draws a straight line along a driveway are three different jobs. We build all three as part of our paver installation work, and the same estimate can cover the surface at the foot of the wall.
Segmental block retaining wall
Interlocking concrete units stacked with a slight step back into the slope, no mortar; the weight of the blocks and the gravel behind them do the holding. Built for real grade changes: a bank behind the house, a cut for a flat patio, or a slope that sheds dirt onto the lawn every winter.
Block planter wall
The same block family, built lower, to raise a bed rather than hold a hillside. Irrigation sleeves go through the base course and drip line runs inside the bed, so the plants get the water and the wall stays dry. It terraces a backyard in steps, edges a lawn, or frames the front entry.
Railroad tie wall
Timber ties stacked, pinned with steel, and backed with the same gravel and drain as a block wall. The look is heavy and rustic, suits a ranch-style yard or a garden border, and the material costs less up front than block. Wood is the trade-off, and it has a shorter life in wet soil than block.
Holding a slope
A bank that washes out onto the patio or the neighbor's side gets one wall at the toe, or two shorter walls when the slope is long.
Terracing a backyard
A sloped lot becomes two flat levels: a lower patio and an upper lawn or garden, with a step between them instead of a hill.
Borders and edges
A low wall along a paver driveway keeps bed soil off the surface, and a wall at the top of a slope keeps a lawn from creeping down it.
What makes a wall last, part by part
Seven parts, from the trench up, and what goes wrong when each is skipped. The buried parts are the same for a planter wall and a tie wall; only the material stacked on top changes.
A trench dug below the finished grade in front of the wall, filled with crushed rock and run over with a plate compactor until it stops moving under foot.
A wall set on loose dirt settles unevenly, and every course above copies the dip. On a short wall this trench is where most of the labor goes, and it is the part nobody ever sees.
The bottom row, set partly below grade and leveled block by block in both directions on the compacted rock.
Every course above is only as level as this one. A low corner here becomes a lean at the top, and burying the first course keeps the toe of the wall from kicking out.
Each row sits a little farther back into the slope than the one below it, so the wall leans into the soil it holds. A lip or pins lock each unit to the row beneath.
A wall stacked dead vertical has nothing but its own weight against the push of wet soil. The step back, called batter, puts that weight to work.
A column of clean, open rock directly behind the blocks, from the base up to just under the cap, with filter fabric between the rock and the soil.
Water that reaches the back of the wall drops through the rock to the drain instead of building pressure against the blocks. Saturated clay pushing on a wall is the usual reason a wall bows.
A slotted pipe laid in the gravel at the base of the wall, wrapped so fines cannot clog it, and sloped to daylight or to a drain box.
Gravel collects the water; the pipe has to carry it away. Without an outlet the gravel column fills up and the wall is holding a pond.
Soil returned behind the gravel in shallow layers, each one compacted before the next goes on.
Backfill dumped in one lift settles for years, opening a gap at the top of the wall and a low spot in the terrace. Lifts keep the ground behind the wall where you put it.
A solid capstone glued to the top course, overhanging the face slightly.
The cap keeps rain out of the hollow cores, gives the wall an edge you can sit on, and stops the top course from being pried loose.
Why walls fail
Three causes come up again and again: no drainage behind the wall, no compacted base under it, and a vertical stack built hard against wet clay. Each one is a shortcut on the part of the job that is buried when the wall is finished, which is why none of the seven parts above is optional.
Height, engineering, and permits
Taller walls, walls that hold up a driveway or a structure, and walls stacked one above another may need an engineered design and a permit. We say so at the estimate, before the price is set, so the wall you get is the wall the site allows.
Drip lines inside, turf and pavers outside
A planter wall is a retaining wall with a garden on top, so it is built with the plants in mind. Before the first course goes down we set sleeves through the base for irrigation and low-voltage wire, so nobody has to cut a block later. Drip line runs inside the bed above the gravel column, and the emitters water the roots instead of the wall. Weep gaps at the base let the bed drain after a heavy watering.
What sits at the foot of the wall matters as much as the wall. A paver patio at the base needs the wall's drain to exit somewhere other than under the patio, so both go on one plan and the patio is pitched away from the wall. Artificial turf on the terrace above gets its own base and its own edge along the cap, so turf and wall move independently and the seam stays tight.
The trade-offs, stated plainly
Railroad ties are the wall we get asked about when the budget is tight or the yard already has a ranch feel. They go in fast, they cost less in material than block, and the look is warm next to a decomposed granite path or a bed of native plants. They look wrong beside a crisp modern patio, and we will say so.
The honest part is lifespan. Wood in contact with wet soil rots from the back face forward, and ties that were treated for rail service are not what we would put beside a vegetable bed. A tie wall in a dry border outlasts one holding a wet slope, and a block wall outlasts both. When ties are the right call we build them; when the slope is steep or the soil stays wet, we steer you to block and explain why.
Old tie walls that have started to lean are one of the most common reasons we get the call. Pulling the timber and hauling it off is part of demolition and site prep, and the wall that replaces it goes on a fresh base rather than the old one.
What local ground does to a wall, and what decides the price
The ground is the reason drainage gets so much attention on this page. Inland clay swells when it is wet and shrinks when it dries, so a wall built against it takes a push every winter and a pull every summer. Inland clay swells when it is wet and pushes hardest in late winter, so the gravel column goes deeper there; coastal sand drains but washes through the joints without fabric behind the block. Hillside lots add runoff from above, water arriving from a neighbor's yard or a slope behind the house, which has to be caught at the top of the wall and carried around it rather than through it. Drainage and grading is often part of the same estimate on a sloped lot, because the wall is only half of the water plan.
On the day, the crew stakes the line, cuts the trench, sets and compacts the base, then lays the first course before any soil goes back. Backfill goes in behind each few courses, and the cap goes on last.
A block wall asks for almost nothing afterward: keep the drain outlet clear, keep sprinklers from soaking the top of the wall, and check the cap adhesive every few years. A tie wall wants a look at the back face and the pins each season. What people ask before a retaining wall
Height and what the wall supports decide it. Taller retaining walls, and walls that hold up a driveway, a structure, or a slope above a neighbor, may need an engineered design and a permit. We look at the site and tell you which case your wall is in before it is priced, and when drawings are needed they come first and the wall is built to them.
Yes, and it is a common call. The cut for the wall goes back into firm ground rather than the loose material that moved, and the drain at the base picks up the water that started the slide. On a long slope we often build two shorter terraced walls instead of one tall one, which spreads the load and gives you a flat step to use.
The top row leans out, the steel spikes show where the wood around them has shrunk, and the face feels soft when you press a screwdriver into it. We pull it, rebuild the base, and set block in its place, or a fresh tie wall if the spot is dry and the look matters more than the years.
Water should leave through the drain, not the face. A wall that weeps at the joints or grows a white deposit on the front is telling you the drain is blocked or was never installed. On our retaining walls the outlet is visible and we show you where it is, so a quick look after a storm tells you the wall is draining.
A fence changes the load and has to be planned from the first course, because its post footings sit in the backfill. A patio or turf on the terrace is normal; the surface gets its own base behind the cap and is pitched away from the wall so its water does not run into the backfill.
