Backyard turf installation for play areas, lounge lawns, and game spaces

Backyard turf installation from VC Turf gives Ventura County families a yard they use every day, with no sprinkler under it and no mud tracked in after. We plan it by zone: where the kids play, where the chairs go, where the bocce court runs, and how the turf meets the patio, the pool, and the fire pit.

The usual reasons: mud by the back door every winter, a bare patch under the swings, a brown lawn the sprinklers cannot save, or a party lawn nobody wants to sit on.

Backyard zones

One yard, several jobs. Pick a zone to see what it needs.

A backyard is not one lawn. The corner under the swing set takes falls, the strip by the fence takes bean bags, the patch by the pool takes wet feet. Each zone gets its own pile height, infill, and base, then the pieces are seamed into one lawn over the mesh, rock, and weed barrier described on our artificial turf installation page. A putting green uses a different turf and base, so it is its own build: see putting green installation.

Play area

Swing sets, climbers, and the patch where the ball always lands.

PileTaller, soft pile from the middle of our 73 to 126 oz range, in several blade colors.
InfillRounded infill, brushed in lighter than a front lawn gets, so the blades stay soft under bare knees.
BaseCompacted class 2 base over gopher mesh, brushed a little softer where swings and climbers land.
Layout tipKeep the play zone off the path between the door and the patio, well clear of the fire pit, with a fall zone all the way around anything a kid can climb.
Patio edgeTurf is cut tight to the paver or slab edge and nailed along a bender board so the line stays straight and nothing lifts.
Pool deckCoping stays between water and turf. The base slopes away from the pool and a drain catches the splash-out.
Fire pitTurf is plastic and melts. The pit sits on a ring of pavers or decomposed granite wide enough that an ember lands on stone, not blades.
Planters and bordersA block planter or a DG border gives the turf a clean line to stop at. Turf cut in a wobbly curve around a bush never looks finished.
Where turf meets everything else

Patios, pools, fire pits, and planters: the edges decide how the yard looks

Most backyards we build already have a slab, a pool, or a pit in them, and the edge where turf meets each one is where a cheap install gives itself away. A lawn that stops at a straight paver line looks planned. A lawn that wanders around the furniture looks like leftover carpet.

Turf and hardscape go in on the same visit. When the patio is not there yet, we set the paver patio first and cut the turf to it. Furniture pads, the bocce surface, and the fire pit ring are decomposed granite and decorative rock work by the same crew.

Layout, sun, and slope

Plan the traffic, the shade, and the grade before the first roll is cut

At the estimate we draw the yard in 2D CAD and mark the paths people actually walk, the pads where furniture lives, and the corners that get afternoon sun. The busiest path gets heavier turf. Full-sun corners get lighter-colored turf, and a shade sail over the lounge zone does more for August comfort than any product choice.

Gophers get mesh under every zone, and watering rules do not touch a yard with no sprinklers. If your HOA reviews yard changes, read the CC&Rs before the demo starts.

Flat yard

One compacted base at one depth, pitched slightly so water leaves toward a drain or a bed. The easiest base to keep level for a cornhole lane.

Sloped yard

Terraced with planter walls and drained at the low side. Game zones need a level terrace; a lounge lawn can follow a mild fall. Steep lots start with drainage and grading.

Backyard before artificial turf installation Before the crew arrives
1
Clear and protectFurniture, grills, and toys move out. The pool is covered before any dirt moves.
2
Demo and gradeOld grass, roots, and sprinkler heads leave on the truck. The yard is graded to its final fall, terraced if it slopes.
3
Mesh, base, barrierGopher mesh, class 2 base compacted zone by zone, then weed barrier. Pads, court edging, and drains go in now.
4
Turf by zoneEach zone's turf is laid with the grain one way, seamed, stretched, nailed, infilled, and brushed. DG goes into the court last.
5
Walk it with youThe crew cleans to the gate and walks every zone with you.
Cost and the day itself

What moves the estimate, and what the crew does on the day

Square footage sets the turf, rock, and infill. After that, the number of zones matters most: every change in pile height is another seam, and a bocce surface is its own material. What comes out counts too; dirt hauls cheaper than a dead lawn, and a dead lawn cheaper than an old slab. Slope, clay, and a narrow side gate add base work or wheelbarrow time.

The free estimate itemizes each factor, with turf samples laid on your dirt so you can compare pile heights by hand. On the day, expect a truck at the curb, the old lawn out first, the plate compactor running on each zone's base, then turf, seams, and infill, and a walk of every edge with you before we leave.

Living with it

Upkeep, lifespan, and what the warranty covers

A backyard gets harder use than a front lawn. The path from the door to the patio mats first; brush it against the grain a few times a year. Rinse the pool edge when infill shows up on the coping. If a dog shares the yard, the relief zone is built and rinsed the way our pet turf page describes.

The manufacturers rate their turf for 15 to 20 years and back it with their warranties; we go over the terms for the turf you pick at the estimate. VC Turf is a California licensed contractor, CSLB #1036018, so the demo, grading, hardscape, and turf come from one licensed crew rather than three subcontractors.

Brush the pathAgainst the grain, where feet cross the same line daily.
Rinse the hot spotsA hose cools full-sun turf and clears the pool edge.
Rake, do not blowLeaves out before they rot into the infill.
Common questions

Questions people ask about backyard turf

Is backyard turf safe for kids to play on?

Yes. A backyard turf play zone uses a taller, softer pile with lighter infill where kids land from swings. There is no fertilizer, pesticide, or mud on it, and it rinses with a hose.
